Experience as a Licensed Psychologist and a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor

As a licensed psychologist and a licensed professional clinical counselor, Dr. Burnes provides individual, relationship, family, and group therapy and counseling services. He has worked primarily with adolescents, young adults and adults in clinical practice, working in a variety of settings in public and private sectors with clients who are marginalized based on their sociocultural identities. He has also served as an administrator and interim director for various mental health centers. He has supervised numerous pre-licensed professionals in private practice and agencies in delivering mental health services. Dr. Burnes was recently awarded the 2024 Best in Practice by the Society of Counseling Psychology.

Dr. Burnes is committed to keeping up with evidence-based practice and constantly growing in multicultural humility to ensure that you can feel supported and valued and also can achieve the needed change to be your best self. He has experience in working with clients of various ages (childhood through late adulthood) on: moving through anxiety and depression; mental wellness for LGBQ people and for people with various gender identities and expressions; intersex identities; sexuality and sexual expression; career counseling; coping for individuals in stressful careers; grief and loss. Dr. Burnes was an affiliated therapist at the Los Angeles Gender Center for nine years, where he received extensive training and consultation in working with transgender, nonbinary, and gender expansive adolescents, adults, and their loved ones.

Dr. Burnes has 24 years experience working with adolescents, adults, intimate partnerships and relationships, and families. His practice affirms all relationship structures and configurations (Dr. Burnes is kink, sex work, and poly-affirming). He is committed to celebrating his clients' interconnected, multiple identities. 

Dr. Burnes also specializes in executive coaching with academic professionals at various points in their careers.
